The instant the two girls opened the attic door, they beheld a vast room crowded with antique couches and dressers covered in dust and old books and magazines. There was also, of course, the piping of the house which gave the whole room a mysterious unearthly air.
Hazel was immediately drawn to a
large vanity in the back left corner next to a dusty pile of books. It was a
simple brown color with a broken mirror in the rounded frame. A large old oak
jewelry box sat on it. Hazel’s curiosity sharpened; she loved old jewelry more
than almost anything else. Quickly she stumbled over chairs and stacks of books
to her desired destination.
Alex had already found the light
switch and was hastily making her way across the room to turn on the other
bare-bulb, once she had stumbled over to that one and flicked it, she dove head
first into the pile of old fashion magazines that were in a box by a small
spider webbed filled bookcase. Hazel went over to the big jewelry box her
conscience chiding her as she did, she opened the top compartment with a loud
groaning creak, one small golden locket was resting on the velvet padding
shining in the light giving of from the light bulb. She stared at it in awe for
a moment and then reached out to touch its smooth surface when...
"Ahem!" A loud throat
clearing noise filled Hazel’s ears, she cringed. She knew that sound all too
well. Reluctantly she turned and there, standing in the doorway with her hands
on her hips was the tall, slender, and frizzled Franny. Alex looked up from her
magazine and gulped.
“What, might I ask, are you two
doing in here?” Franny said, her voice menacing. "Did you deliberately
disobey my instruction never to come up here or did you "forget?"
“Umm.” Was all either of them could
respond. Franny pointed a long skinny finger towards the attic door, “Out! Go
to your rooms immediately!” Pulling herself up Alex stomped out and Hazel
followed. Later that evening after a firm reprimanding from Franny and
scoldings from all three of the maids, the girls headed off to bed without
supper.
As Alex crawled into her bed with
her huge novel she started mumbling to herself about the little expedition to
the attic. “What’s her deal anyway?” Hazel heard her say “it’s just a bunch of
junk!” she rolled over and turned her lamp off and flicked her flashlight on.
There must be something up there
that is very important... Hazel mused, and for once in her life the
good obedient attitude that had always kept her in check faltered. She had to
find out what the secret was! Despite her wondering, Hazel soon dozed off. She
woke up a while later to the sound of growling and an empty ache in
her stomach. "Well, If I'm not going to get any sleep, I might as well do
something." she decided. Not bothering to put on her slippers she tip-toed
out into the hallway and started heading for the attic stairs once more.
After only two steps, her heart
jumped: a flashlight beam was coming down the hall!
Her eyes raced from side to side if
she opened the door it would make too much noise and if she ran down the
hall she'd be spotted then she saw
it a big ugly armchair sitting in the corner just one door down the
hall she side stepped and darted
down the hall towards the chair; she made it! She squatted down just out
of sight but to where she could see
who was walking down the hallway. Much to her astonishment she saw Alex
munching on a handful of crackers and walking towards the attic stairway! Hazel
moved from behind the chair and walked into the beam of light, Alex gasped and
almost dropped the flashlight. She walked up close to
Hazel and whispered in a hushed
hurried tone, “What are you doing out of bed!?” Hazel gazed at her accusingly.
"The same thing you're doing I
think.” Hazel whispered back. Alex let her shoulders droop she huffed “It just
wasn't fair the way she sent us off to bed like that and didn't give us an
explanation about why we shouldn't’t be in the attic!" Then her tone
quickly changed, "Sooo…” she stared into Hazels eyes and smiled
disarmingly “I’m going to find out what’s in there!” Hazel sighed. She
was convinced that Alex could read every thought that went on in her mind when
she looked at her.
“Care to join me?” Alex said
smiling wider.
“Sure, I suppose so.” Hazel
shrugged trying not to show how excited she felt. Alex led the way down the hall
and up the attic's steep staircase. "We are in for it if Aunt comes back
up and finds us in here again!" Hazel thought to herself. Alex glanced
back a little nervously too as they stepped into the attic. They were both,
completely oblivious to the two bright green eyes staring at them from the
armchair.
